Sketchbook Weekly #3

I'm going to be at the MegaCon in Orlando, fl representing Ringling School and The Blogarians for the weekend. I'm going to include some figure paintings in this weeks post because I enjoy them and I think they are essential to any artists growth and development. The paintings are quick three hour studies. My main purpose when I paint is to try and explore color and composition. I also try and practice direct application of paint and experimentation of different brush stroke techniques. The sketches are fun and quick and exploratory. Hope you guys enjoy them and please let me know what you think.

Sleepy Hollow and Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde

These are my latest drawings for the 4th and 5th paintings of my thesis. I got a lot of crap from my instructor for both of these. In the Sleepy Hollow piece he said that the horse needed to be included because it was the HEADLESS HORSEMAN but you know what, I would still like to think that the artist has a little bit of freedom and I imagine that sometimes the damn headless horseman dismounts his horse and creeps around his tree for a while...JEEZZ! He also gave me crap for the Jeckyl and Hyde because the evil monster mask has horns but to me it was just a symbol and not the literal head on his shoulders, plus I think horns are cool!! He also thinks that the hat looks like a cowboy hat....sorry but I don't think it does! Well sorry for rambling on...Let me know what YOU guys think, your input would be greatly appreciated.

DREAMS

-Sometimes I dream that I fade away before I touch her
And that my body fades away like flowing flowers
As the wandering souls sing forgotten secrets-

Dreams are the most ramdom things ever I LOVE them. This was so fun. I repeated some elements that I've used before because I find them interesting. This has been a great way to experiment with random things and techniques. It's my birthday weekend so I'm posting this kind of early, Let me know what you guys think.

Sketchbook Weekly #2

While I interned at American Greetings I learned from the pros around me how to design with shape and forms first, and then build from there. I also realized how important line quality is and how much it can do for you. That experience totally changed my frame of mind and I want to thank everyone over there at the licensing department for allowing me the freedom to grow so much. These particular sketches are just random but the trolls are for a children's book assignment I worked on last semester with the fabulous Mary Gran Pre. Many of you may be familiar with her work from the Harry Potter book covers but everything else she did was even more amazing! Hope you like them.

SAMURAI!

Painting this was really fun! I like just being able to make quick desicions and not dwell on it for too long. Hope you guys like.

Well I ended up doing a drawing first for this weeks theme and I liked it alright but wasn't thrilled about it. One night I just decided to grab a piece of left-over board and just started painting in oils. I've never really done that before, and well, I had a blast! The piece went through many transformations but it was the freedom of not having everything planned out that really made this fun. I was rubbing stuff out and repainting and changing my mind constantly and the end result is the image you see here. The other one I like as well and I decided to leave it a sketch because what the hell. Hope you enjoy!!

Sketchbook Weekly #1

I'm going to attempt to post sketchbook work every week (or almost every week). I draw in my sketchbook daily and this will be a way to share some of those drawings with everyone. Hope you guys enjoy them and feel free to share your thoughts about them, any feed back is appreciated.

A character I did over x-mas break...have no idea what he's about...

One of many drawings I did for a Robin Hood piece I was thinking about doing for my thesis...I'm not sure if I'm going to do that story though...hmmmm...

Sometimes I don't think when I draw and I end up with oddyties like this one. I like that though because I never know with what I'll end up.

Another Robin Hood drawing...still don't know.....

Yet another oddity...

Fear!

Great news, Blogarians has launched!!! This blog will be a community post with a few up-and-coming talented artist/illustrators! This is my post for fear, I don't know if it seems like fear but is was a fun experiment and I think the final ended up more creepy than fear. Chris Park will decide on this weeks theme and hes going to announce it in his entry for fear, so be on the lookout!

Attached is a quick sketch I did of my friend Carlo, without a doub a great example of someone to be fearful of.

The Picture of Dorian Grey

This is the drawing for my third thesis painting. I absolutely loved this book and the content was too good not to illustrate it. I love how the story forces us to look at ourselves and our own demons. Especially coming from where I come from, I realize that beauty is king and can sometimes let you get away with murder. It's interesting how a book written over a hundred years ago still, for the most part, reflects our society and vanities. As far as the painting goes it will be pretty dark except for his skin which will be pale and ungodly. Madam X is a good example of what I'm going for. For those of you unfamiliar with the story by Oscar Wilde (and I know that's a lot of you) I highly recommend it.

My Favorite Animal

A couple of friends and I are going to attempt to do a weekly illustration on a variety of themes. This weeks theme was to do your favorite animal. I guess mine is a homage to Don Brandes, a former instructor of mine. He fucking loved monkeys and I guess I think they are pretty cool too, especially to draw. Mauricios theme for next week is Fear so be on the lookout! If anybody wants to join us next week you're more than welcome to...Chris that means you.
